Heinrich Leads Senate Introduction Of Puerto Rico Status Act

In a press conference last Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), alongside Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi and congressional colleagues, introduced the Puerto Rico Status Act. This legislation outlines a process for the people of Puerto Rico to determine the future of the island's political status. Co-led by U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), the bill aims to provide Puerto Ricans with the opportunity to choose between statehood, independence, or sovereignty in free association with the United States.

Senator Heinrich emphasized the moral responsibility to allow American citizens living in Puerto Rico to decide their own future, highlighting the significance of a permanent and democratic resolution after more than 100 years of U.S. citizenship for Puerto Ricans. The bill has garnered support from several senators and representatives, reflecting bipartisan efforts to address Puerto Rico's political status.

Senator Alex Padilla underscored the importance of ensuring that all citizens of the United States enjoy fundamental civil rights, regardless of their place of birth or residence. He highlighted the contradiction faced by Puerto Ricans, who, despite contributing billions of dollars in federal taxes annually, lack voting representation in Congress and access to crucial programs funded by their tax dollars.

The bill proposes a federally sponsored referendum, known as a plebiscite, to resolve Puerto Rico's political status. The options—Statehood, Independence, or Sovereignty in Free Association with the United States—would be chosen by a majority of voters in Puerto Rico. The legislation details the transition to and implementation of a non-territory status for Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi commended the senators for joining the effort to introduce the Puerto Rico Status Act, emphasizing that the people of Puerto Rico deserve the right to decide their own destiny.
